Fanboys Demand Damon Lindelof’s Head After ‘Green Lantern’ Joke

March 17, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

The fanboys are in rebellion. They have collectively lost their mind over a single joke. What started as a casual quip by “Lanterns” co‑creator Damon Lindelof has somehow exploded into impressively, absolutely exhausting vitriol.

The chaos began when a 2024 podcast clip resurfaced in which Lindelof said the show — inspired by Green Lantern — was called Lanterns “because we all agreed the ‘Green’ was stupid.” That’s it. That’s the comment. To most of us, it’s a dumb little joke that didn’t land. However, to the fanboys, who occupy well-known corners of the internet, it’s a declaration of war.

They took offense that the word “green” was so easily dismissed. Social media and forums erupted, because color is serious business. Even Grant Morrison, a comic book icon and longtime Green Lantern writer, decided this was his hill to die on. Morrison publicly called out Lindelof, reminding everyone that the green is “not stupid” and questioning why someone would touch a beloved franchise if they didn’t intend to honor its legacy. Of course, the fanboys rallied behind him.

Revenge of the nerds is now upon us. They want Lindelof’s scalp.

Lindelof, sensing that he had unintentionally triggered a multi-generational internet war over a color palette, had no choice: he wrote an Instagram apology, alongside an old image of him wearing green. He called the comment a “dumb joke,” admitted he’d been “sloppy and careless,” and reassured fans that he likes green personally — in case anyone was wondering.

Even the show’s allies, including co-head James Gunn and actor Nathan Fillion, stepped in to remind everyone that Lindelof was joking and that the series is, in fact, still just a TV show.

Of course, an apology will never be enough. You have to bow down to the green. Kiss its boots. Pray at its altar. A harmless misunderstanding has somehow brought out the digital pitchforks.
