Emma Stone is a two-time Oscar winner, not to mention a six-time acting nominee, and she’s only 37. Coming off “Bugonia,” and with her go-to director—Yorgos Lanthimos—taking a much-needed break, she probably had an assortment of promising projects to choose from. Now, we know what’s next for her.
Stone is set to star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming romantic comedy “The Catch,” in which she will co-star with Chris Pine. A summer shoot is being eyed for the film, which means we’ll likely see it in 2027.
So, what could possibly entice Stone to take on this project, which happens to be her first rom-com in over a decade? Well, “The Catch” is directed by Dave McCary—who also happens to be Stone’s husband. Makes sense now. McCary has directed only one other film in his career—2017’s “Brigsby Bear,” which, truth be told, was an amusing Sundance indie.
“The Catch,” with a script by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin, is being described as a two-hander and will likely be the next film Stone shoots. According to Deadline, she had considered multiple possibilities in the fall, but when a new draft for “The Catch” arrived, her focus shifted to this project.
UPDATE: If we go by an old report from DanielRPK, who had first mentioned this project, Stone will portray a baseball fan who accidentally touches a ball at the wall, turning it into a home run and costing her team a crucial game. She must navigate the unexpected attention and overwhelming guilt that comes with becoming the unintended symbol of her team’s heartbreaking defeat.
In other words, her character will be inspired by the infamous Steve Bartman whose moment of infamy became a national talking point and a lasting symbol of fan involvement gone wrong.
