After many delays, seven years’ worth, and according to Variety, Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu Henry Golding, and Ronnie Chieng will be back for a sequel to the mega-successful and well-reviewed 2018 romcom “Crazy Rich Asians” — but it’ll be in series form, a string of one-hour episodes, airing on HBO.
Filming on the project will take place in Malaysia and Singapore next year. I presume Awkwafina might also take part, or a cameo is in store? Jon M. Chu is not directing this time. Amy Wang will pen the scripts, which is rumored to be an adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s “China Rich Girlfriend,” the second book in the trilogy.
“Crazy Rich Asians” follows a native New Yorker (played by Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend (Golding) in Singapore for his best friend’s wedding and the chance to meet his unorthodox and very rich family, including his disapproving mom (Yeoh).
I wasn’t a fan of the 2018 film, it used very tiresome romcom tropes, and tried to blemish them with inclusive casting. It didn’t work for me. However, the film did make a lot of money, grossing $174M domestically, and seems to be well-liked by the general public. Just not my thing.
A few readers sent me this URL today, and the reaction was mostly confusion. "A very weird list,” one wrote. Many of these are not “defining” but rather a display of taste.
