The man doesn't stop. James Gunn has confirmed he's already hard at work writing his next film, even as ‘Man of Tomorrow’ makes its way toward theaters next summer.
This comes as the Skydance era gets underway at Warner Bros., amid whispers about whether Gunn and Peter Safran would survive the transition. They have — for now. On with the show.
For what it's worth, I had a heads-up on this. Last week, Jamie Williams, the InSneider's resident consigliere, told me they'd heard Gunn had already started writing Superman 3. Now, with Gunn himself confirming he's writing his next film, that intel is looking strong. Nothing's official on what the project is, but if I had to bet, it's the third chapter of his Superman saga.
A quick refresher on where ‘Man of Tomorrow’ stands: it's the follow-up to 2025's “Superman” and is slated for a July 9, 2027 theatrical release. Gunn has described it as a story about Lex Luthor and Superman being forced to work together, to a degree, against a far bigger threat, with David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult back as the Man of Steel and Lex. Gunn has also said it's slightly different in tone from Superman and less comic-booky, which, frankly, I'm glad to hear.
The leading theory is that Gunn is currently writing his ‘World's Finest’ movie: a proper Batman and Superman team-up. Others think Gunn might take over “The Brave and the Bold” himself, after months of rumors that the Andy Muschietti-attached project had stalled.
My two cents.. I'd be surprised if Gunn directs a Batman movie. His sensibility — those needle drops, the cute animal sidekick — is about as far from the Dark Knight as you can get. Batman requires a different kind of filmmaker, and I hope Gunn realizes it. He's previously signaled he plans to direct more DCU projects, and he's said he thinks he knows the next few he'll be directing.
Next up for Gunn's DCU is "Clayface," which cost just $40M and is currently tracking for a $25M–30M opening. Reviews could push that number up or down, but it's certain not to bomb the way "Supergirl" did.
