Remember when Luca Guadagnino's "American Psycho" seemed like it coulf be his next movie? Scott Z. Burns had turned in a script, Lionsgate was still touting progress, the Patrick Bateman casting rumor mill was in overdrive, and just this August, "Queer" star Drew Starkey said he'd read Burns' screenplay and called it "amazing."
Well, cool your jets.
In a new Vulture profile, which is mostly about his upcoming OpenAI drama "Artificial," Guadagnino gets walked through his ever-growing list of projects, most of them still in development. When "American Psycho" comes up, his response is about as noncommittal as it gets: "Maybe one day I [will] do it."
That's not exactly the sound of a filmmaker gearing up to shoot. Bottom line: "American Psycho" isn't dead. But "maybe one day" is a long way from "next."
This comes after a report, back in August, of a lead actor still not having been chosen— a handful of A-listers have reportedly turned the Patrick Bateman role down. Casting has reportedly been difficult, and Guadagnino, alongside Burns, revised the screenplay multiple times in response to feedback.
The current script allegedly delays Patrick Bateman’s full psycho emergence until very late in the story.
Vulture also brings up DC's "Sgt. Rock.” Asked what happened there, Guadagnino's answer was a classic: "You should ask them." Ouch. Apparently, Guadagnino was in prep last summer, a month or so away from shooting, when James Gunn paused the entire production.
Guadagnino has shot a movie every summer since 2021 — that’s quite the stat. Five straight summers in production, showcasing just how prolific he’s become: “Bones and All,” “Challengers,” “Queer,” “After the Hunt,” and “Artificial.” That streak ended this year. Guadagnino hasn’t shot anything, and that’s despite being attached to almost ten different projects.
BREAKING: Steven Soderbergh has stepped in to finish "The Batman Part II" as Matt Reeves remains away due to family reasons. This is a beautiful gesture, if you ask me: a filmmaker helping out a fellow filmmaker.
