Well, that was fast.
In one of the least surprising sequel announcements, ‘The Housemaid 2’ is now officially in the works, with star Sydney Sweeney and director Paul Feig set to return. Amanda Seyfreid will only have a cameo in this one (more on that near the end of this piece).
“The Housemaid,” which only cost $35M, has already grossed $133M in just over two weeks of release—Lionsgate has greenlit a sequel, titled “The Housemaid’s Secret,” based on the second novel in Freida McFadden’s best-selling trilogy. Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine will return to adapt the sequel. It’s set to shoot later this year.
The film barely dipped at the box office, dropping just 1% from the previous weekend with a $15M three-day total. Depending on how early they can begin shooting the sequel, it might sneak into a 2026 Christmas release slot, though it’s unlikely they’ll hit that date.
It’ll all depend on Sweeney’s schedule. She’s set to shoot Colman Domingo’s “Scandalous!” this month, in which she plays Kim Novak, and her Michael Bay-directed “OutRun” is still in development. So, I gather ‘The Housemaid’ sequel could potentially begin production in the spring.
This past weekend, at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Amanda Seyfried confirmed that a ‘Housemaid’ sequel was all but “guaranteed” and that she was going to have a “small cameo” in it, because it’s more about Sweeney’s character and her working for a new family.
As mentioned, “The Housemaid” is based on an ultra-popular book—described as a “monster hit”—written by Freida McFadden. Translated into over forty languages, the book has gained huge traction on social media, especially TikTok, and has so far sold 4.5 million copies.
