Yes — an extended cut of Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” is in the works. Last night, at a Sundance screening of “Cronos,” the filmmaker confirmed that he’s putting together an extended version of his film that’s more comprehensive than the theatrical/Netflix cut.
This version is reportedly being referred to as the “all the stitches” cut — aimed at fans who want more of his full vision. It’s not yet official where it will appear, and details on how or where it will be shown (Netflix, Blu‑ray/DVD) have not yet been announced.
The current cut of “Frankenstein” runs about 150 minutes (2 hrs 30 min). We know of at least one deleted scene, a 7‑minute sequence del Toro removed on James Cameron’s suggestion, and del Toro has spoken of several others in recent months. Don’t be surprised if, when all is said and done, “all the stitches” ends up nearing the 3-hour mark.
“Frankenstein” was recently nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design, and Sound.
