Here comes Chad Stahelski’s “Highlander,” for which we have our first look at Henry Cavill as the lead.
Cavill took to his personal Instagram this morning to share the first two official images — which can be seen below. Cavill posted the photos with a caption reading:
“Happy First Look for Highlander! This has been quite the journey for me, which I’ll tell you all about when the time is right, but it’s a special moment to be able to share this. I hope you enjoy. #Highlander”
The film will no doubt showcase Stahelski’s signature style—balletic action, especially in sword fighting. Stylistically, it will probably be very different from the 1986 original, which notoriously spawned three terrible sequels.
“Highlander” was supposed to start shooting last fall but had its production delayed to 2026 after Cavill reportedly sustained an undisclosed injury during pre-production while training for the Amazon/MGM Studios project. Shooting began this month in London.
Written by Michael Finch, the film also features Russell Crowe, Jeremy Irons, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, and Max Zhang.
The “Highlander” reboot has faced several production setbacks. Stahelski originally aimed to begin filming in late 2024, later shifting toward a January 2025 start. However, delays caused by additional work on “Ballerina” pushed the schedule back once again. The film then encountered another hurdle with Cavill’s injury, but it sounds like it’s now back on track.
Stahelski, who turned “John Wick” into a billion-dollar franchise, wanted a $180M budget to reboot “Highlander.” Lionsgate balked, capping their interest at a still-eye-opening $165M. Amazon, because they light cigars with money, said sure, and took over the project. That budget has probably now risen because of all the delays.
Stahelski previously indicated that the film was being eyed for a 2027 or 2028 theatrical release window, though this has not been officially set by Amazon/MGM.
