Jon Favreau’s ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Releases First Trailer

September 22, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

So, this trailer for “The Mandalorian & Grogu”was actually supposed to come out last Thursday but because of the Jimmy Kimmel firing, Disney pushed it to this morning.

Pedro Pascal is returning as titular bounty hunter Din Djarin. Sigourney Weaver joins him in an undisclosed role, Jabba the Hut’s son, Rotta, is voiced by Jeremy Allen White, while showrunner Jon Favreau is in the director's chair. The trailer looks silly. Baby Yoda is there. Sure, why not. The poster — posted below — is gorgeous, though.

This looks like it could have easily just been a streaming movie. There’s nothing in there that has the pull of a must-see theatrical experience. Sure, Favreau is a reliable filmmaker, and maybe he’s made a good film, but why was a decision made for this to be the first Star Wars movie in over six years?

This trailer comes just a week after a first look image was released for Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which is supposed to come out in 2027. After six years of inactivity, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy’s is finally going back to Star Wars theatrical releases.

With Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s planned Rey having been put “on hold”, the only thing that Lucasfilm has got going for it right now is the success of their Disney+ shows, which includes ‘The Mandalorian.’ It’s no coincidence then that Lucasfilm has decided to bet all of its chips on a ‘Mandalorian’ movie.

So it happens, according to one of the show’s stars, Giancarlo Esposito, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is being planned as a trilogy of films, or maybe more. This makes sense. “The Mandalorian,” which aired its first three seasons on Disney+, is a very popular show, and Lucasfilm is now banking on its streaming audience to watch it in theaters.

There are at least five other ‘Star Wars’ projects currently in development, from directors Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Simon Kinberg, and Patty Jenkins. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is coming first, the others will likely remain, for the time being, in development.

“The Mandalorian & Grogu” is set to hit theaters May 22, 2026.
