Summer is down to its final stretch, and the only major studio-wide entry this mid-August weekend is Universal’s “Nobody 2.” The Bob Odenkirk-led action sequel kicked off Thursday with $1.3M from previews across 2,800 theaters. The $25M-budget film is aiming for a $10M opening.
In fact, it looks as though “Freakier Friday” might best “Nobody,” as it earned $2M on Thursday and could very well end up in second place. The Disney film, which has so far earned $57M, could turn out to be a small-scale success for the Mouse House with a reported budget of only $42M.
Set to dominate again this weekend is “Weapons,” which is on track to rule with a $25M+ sophomore frame. That’s a small dip, well below 50%, and marks what continues to be a massive word-of-mouth hit for Warner Bros.
“Weapons” finishes its first week with $64M. The marketplace is thinning, and the studios know it. That could benefit Zach Cregger’s film, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes close to hitting $30M by Sunday evening. This could mean a second weekend that rivals word-of-mouth horror hits such as “Sinners” (-7%) and “Get Out” (-17%).
