Warner Bros. appears to be putting this one on the fast track—and if you’ve been following along, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. The studio clearly wants to keep the momentum it built this summer from losing steam.
James Gunn had already told THR that his ‘Superman’ follow-up would “begin production not too far away from today.” Now, we have two updates coming in, and they hint at massive progress.
In an interview with Collider, Gunn admits how quickly the project is moving forward.
We’re scheduling it now. I’m totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They’re not regular treatments. They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I’m just turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.
According to insider EmpireCity Box Office, Warner Bros. is already targeting an early 2026 production start, with a July 2027 release date all but locked in for Superman 2—or whatever title it ultimately carries.
Gunn refuses to label it a “sequel,” but let’s be honest—“Superman” will once again be front and center. The plot remains under wraps, though speculation ranges from a Superman/Supergirl team-up to a storyline involving The Authority.
Superman has fared well for Warner Bros., earning solid reviews (83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and pulling in $333M domestically, for a $583M global total—despite softer overseas numbers. It hit VOD today.
Looking ahead, Supergirl arrives in theaters next summer, Clayface begins shooting in September, and Wonder Woman is also in the fast lane. It looks like ‘Superman 2’ is next up on the DCU slate.
