Paul Schrader’s ‘Three Guns at Dawn’ Is Now an AI Movie, Antoine Fuqua No Longer Involved

Back in 2024, Paul Schrader mentioned that he had written a screenplay titled “Three Guns at Dawn” and that he wanted Antoine Fuqua to direct it.

The script, set in Los Angeles’ South Central, concerns three brothers — a dirty cop, a serial killer, and a drug dealer — who hate one another.

Fuqua, who is also the producer, sold the script to Netflix and wanted Schrader to direct. The problem was that Schrader feared he would be accused of “cultural appropriation” if he directed a film about three African-American brothers in an all-Black neighborhood.

Schrader’s suggestion for resolving this problem? He would co-direct the film with a Black man. You can’t make this up …

Now, speaking with Deadline, Schrader has an update when it comes to this ever-morphing project: Fuqua is no longer involved, and it’s now an AI movie.

Antoine is no longer involved. That was originally called Three Guns at Dawn. It has now become something different and is being reconfigured. It’s now an AI project.

Schrader doesn’t give a flying thought to what others think. He is ready to explore AI in filmmaking, and he recently told Vanity Fair that he had a “perfect script to do all AI.”

I was just on the phone with someone today about a script I had, and I said, ‘You know, this would be a perfect script to do all AI.’

He was most likely talking about “Three Guns at Dawn,” or whatever it’s called now.

Schrader has long been open to AI in filmmaking. He frequently posts AI-generated images of himself on Facebook and has admitted to using AI for script ideas. Did it come up with this new version of “Three Guns at Dawn”? I would think the possibility is there.
