Ah, yes — the trailer for HBO’s $300M-costing first season of their ‘Harry Potter’ reboot.
Brace yourselves, Potterheads and doomscrollers alike: HBO’s ultra-hyped, totally necessary reboot will debut on Christmas 2026. Dominic McLaughlin plays “the boy who lived.” More than 30,000 hopefuls auditioned for the role—so kudos to the chosen one.
Visually, it looks impressive, with a noticeably more contemporary feel than the original films. That’s hardly surprising given how much filmmaking technology has evolved over the fifteen years since they were released. There’s a distinctly digital polish to the cinematography. The young cast also appears to have been chosen well. Inevitably, the series will retain plenty of elements from the movies, but the real test will be whether it can carve out enough of its own identity rather than simply feeling like a retelling of what we’ve already seen.
McLaughlin takes on the iconic role that catapulted Daniel Radcliffe to worldwide fame, stepping into the familiar robes of Harry Potter. He’ll be joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, completing a trio of entirely new faces. The series is being billed as a more “faithful” take on J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books, and they will have time to expand on the details since each season will tackle a single book.
The rest of the cast includes, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Behind the camera, Succession’s Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer. Mark Mylod, also of “Succession” fame, will direct multiple episodes and executive produce.
Essiedu claimed he received death threats after being cast as Severus Snape, adding that he was the victim of abuse online, including messages telling him to “quit or I’ll murder you,” which he described as emotionally taxing. Poor guy.
The series is executive produced by Gardiner, Mylod, and — surprise! — J.K. Rowling, who remains deeply attached to the franchise she birthed, despite her Twitter feed doing its best to alienate half of it.
The upcoming series is being touted as one of the most expensive shows ever made, with a jaw-dropping $2 billion budget. That’s around $300M per season. Whether this becomes a worthy successor to the beloved film series—or simply a nostalgia-fueled cash grab—remains to be seen. Either way, it’s happening. Not even Pedro Pascal can stop it.
