With its Main Slate and Currents lineups already announced, the 63rd New York Film Festival has now unveiled its Spotlight selections.
Save for “Anemone” and ‘Springsteen,’ there’s not too many surprises, but I highly recommend you watch Sundance’s most acclaimed documentaries, Geeta Gandbhir’s “The Perfect Neighbor.”
If anything, it’s what’s missing? That might be more intriguing. Nowhere to be found are Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet,” Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” Mona Fastvold’s “The Testament of Ann Lee,” Olivier Assayas’”Wizard of the Kremlin,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” and Julian Schnabel’s “In the Hands of Dante.”
A film’s absence from the NYFF slate might hint at its quality — or just reflect a studio’s scheduling priorities. Aside from Zhao, who is headed to Telluride, every title mentioned above is bound for Venice.
Check out the full Spotlight lineup below.
