It looks like James Gunn has confirmed that a “Superman” sequel is in the works, only weeks after the film’s theatrical release.
Over on Threads, Gunn responded to a fan asking what he was currently working on:
“Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!”
Pressed further by another user — “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TEASE THE SEQUEL” — Gunn shot back with:
“I JUST DID!”
Gunn seems to be referring to a continuation of “Superman,” given the timing and phrasing. It’s also no secret that “Superman” has done reasonably well at the box office and boasts good reviews (83% on RT). Warner Bros likely wants the sequel to move quickly.
What makes this notable, though, is that Gunn previously indirectly denied TheInSneider’s report that he was writing ‘Superman 2.’ However, now it seems Gunn is, indeed, headed in that direction. It was inevitably gling to happen.
In the meantime, you have “Superman,” which despite struggling overseas, has actual legs domestically inching ever so close to a $300M North American tally. Its current worldwide gross is $509M. That’s decent for a film that’s supposed to launch Gunn’s DCU.
Up next, “Supergirl” is released next summer. “Clayface” starts production in September. “Wonder Woman” is being fast tracked. Don’t be surprised if ‘Superman 2’ is next in line after those three titles.
