Over the weekend, Dermot Mulroney revealed that Sony was eager to move forward with a sequel to ‘90s romcom “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” with their legal team already contacting the cast’s representatives to check on availability and discuss salary terms.
It turns out the script for this sequel was written by Celine Song (via Collider). Song has only been tapped to write the sequel for now; no director is attached, but it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Sony decides to offer her directing reins.
Song clearly isn’t slowing down. After the critical success of “Past Lives” and this summer’s “Materialists,” the filmmaker has decided to stick with romance and revive the romcom, a genre which she recently stated was taken down post-90s by “misogyny.”
“My Best Friend’s Wedding” starred Julia Roberts and Mulroney as Julianne and Michael, lifelong friends who once promised to marry each other if they were still single by age 28. Just days before Julianne’s 28th birthday, Michael drops a bombshell—he’s engaged to 20-year-old Kimberly (Cameron Diaz).
The original was directed by P. J. Hogan from a screenplay by Ronald Bass (“Rain Man”). Hogan hasn’t directed a film in over 13 years, and Bass’ last noteworthy film was 1999’s “Entrapment.” They’re both out for the sequel — likely replaced by two women — which suggests a very different kind of film this time around. No complaints here.
In 2023, Roberts shared her interest in revisiting the role of Jules when asked which of her past films she’d like to see get a sequel. “I think, maybe, My Best Friend’s Wedding,” she said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.
Bringing in Song would surely add street cred to the sequel, which still seems to be in development, for now, but is eyeing a fast track, especially after Roberts is done her fall promo tour for Luca Guadagnino’s ‘After the Hunt.”
