A few years ago, Warner Bros. acquired an R-rated animated comedy from filmmaker Genndy Tartakovsky (“Hotel Transylvania”) called “Fixed,” about a dog’s wild last night before being neutered.
The film is a co-production between Warner’s New Line and Sony Pictures, and it wrapped production in 2023 with a voice cast that includes Adam Devine and Kathryn Hahn. However, Warner CEO David Zaslav put the kibosh on the entire project, much like he did with “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. ACME.”
Warner Bros. decided not to release “Fixed.” Instead, the plan was to shelve it as part of another tax write-off. Eventually, Sony got it back and sold it to Netflix, which has now set up the film with an August 13, 2025 streaming date. In the process, a trailer has been released, and, um, okay, not entirely sure about this one.
The animation looks great, but the humor is juvenile, and crass. This could be another “Sausage Party” — and R-rated animated film solely selling itself on shock value. It’s baffling that a director of Tartakovsky’s caliber—responsible for “Samurai Jack” and “Dexter’s Laboratory”—would deem this his “passion project.”
Tartakovsky, known for his wonderful work on “Samurai Jack,” has described “Fixed” as a "sweet, charming, sincere story of friendship and romance," emphasizing its commitment to 2D animation and original storytelling. I just hope the trailer is misleading.
“Fixed” features a large ensemble voice cast that includes Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan, Beck Bennett, Michelle Buteau, and River Gallo. The movie originally premiered at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 11, where it earned positive reviews.
