With “Superman” now out of the way, “Supergirl” and “Clayface” are next in James Gunn’s DCU. What comes after that? Apparently, a “Wonder Woman” reboot is turning into a real possibility.
Gunn had already let it slip that a “Wonder Woman” movie was in active development, but Variety is now reporting that the project is being “fast-tracked” with the search for director and actress on. Gal Gadot is not returning.
This comes after Gadot’s run as Diana Prince, which spanned two films under Patty Jenkins. Plans for a third Gadot-led “Wonder Woman” got the axe when Gunn and Safran took the reins to reshape the DCU.
If you remember, when Safran and Gunn were hired to helm DC Studios, Gadot claimed that she might return, but her words were quickly denied by Gunn. They’ve essentially let go of Jenkins’s services as well.
The last instalment, “Wonder Woman 1984,” tanked critically and commercially. Nobody cared for it. I also thought the first one was overrated; released at the start of #MeToo, and praised for its feminism.
The good news is that Gadot won’t return, as Gunn, during his time as DCU head, has deliberately distanced his DCU from Zack Snyder’s vision. Additionally, Gadot’s acting abilities, often criticized, further diminished her chances of reprising the role. A fresh new start is the aim here.
