Craig Brewer will finally be directing Universal’s long-gestating Snoop Dogg biopic, he takes over original helmer Allen Hughes. This one’s long been in development but seems to finally be picking up some steam.
Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who rose to fame in the early ‘90s under the mentorship of Dr. Dre. Known for his laid-back flow, West Coast style, and iconic persona, Snoop became a defining figure in hip-hop with hits like “Gin and Juice” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”
It’s worth mentioning that Brewer is the writer and director of this fall’s “Song Sung Blue,” starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. Brewer’s made a handful of strong films, including “Hustle & Flow,” and “Dolemite Is My Name,” but recently got a nice big fat paycheck to helm the critically panned “Coming 2 America.”
Casting is currently underway to find an actor to play Snoop. They’re not looking for a familiar name, but are instead eyeing a newcomer to take on the task of playing the rapper. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one starts production before the year is done.
