David Fincher's ‘Squid Game: America' Eyeing December Shoot

June 27, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Last night, Season 3 of Netflix’s “Squid Game” officially landed, and with it came a climactic twist that nobody saw coming.

SPOILERS AHEAD

None other than Cate Blanchett made a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance in the closing moments of the season, dropping a major hint at where this franchise could be headed next. The final scene moves away from Korea and plants us firmly in Los Angeles. There, we witness Blanchett playing a mysterious figure. Her role is credited simply as a “Special Appearance,” and for now, that’s the extent of it.

Regardless, Blanchett’s presence is more than just fan service—it’s clearly meant to lay some groundwork. More than anything, the scene is a narrative handoff, a subtle way of paving the way for David Fincher’s “Squid Game: America,” which is very much in the works over at Netflix.

The project is indeed not a remake of ‘Squid Game,’ but rather a spinoff series that’ll further delve into the mythology that’s already been built up by the previous incarnation. Dennis Kelly, creator of “Utopia,” is reportedly handling writing duties. Still no word yet on whether Fincher will all of the episodes.

Now, according to What’s On Netflix, Fincher, already knee-deep in Netflix originals, is somehow eyeing a December 2025 L.A. shoot for “Squid Game: America.” He’s supposed to shoot “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” from July to December, so that wouldn’t give much leeway or rest in between.

Fincher has an exclusive, multi-year deal with Netflix that was recently extended for three additional years. The filmmaker has been all about Netflix for almost 12 years now, delving into the streaming game full-on, creating shows such as “House of Cards,” “Mindhunter“ “Love, Death + Robots” and films like “Mank” and “The Killer.”
