Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” is being released tomorrow — previews are set to begin unusually early at 1pm. The review (and social media) embargo has only lifted now, and guess what? The reviews are uniformly positive.
The film currently has a 76 on Metacritic and sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Why did Sony make critics wait until the very last day to publish their reviews? It’s mind-boggling. Tracking has been going down on this one fpr a few days now due to lack of buzz.
Regardless, this is turning into Boyle’s best-reviewed film in almost 10 years. His last two — “T2 Trainspotting” and “Yesterday” — were not that well received. Call it an artistic comeback for one of mainstream cinema’s great visualists.
Boyle has essentially made one strange art-horror film, and I can definitely imagine the token mainstream moviegoer being completely puzzled, bewildered, maybe even frustrated, by some of the wild artistic choices in this one. I’ve got more to say about this film soon —stay tuned.
