First Look: Kogonada’s ‘Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ — Trailer Next Week

May 29, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Sony recently delayed the release of “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” rescheduling it for September 19. This shift from its original May 9, 2025 date positioned Kogonada’s latest film for a fall film festival premiere—most likely the Toronto International Film Festival.

We now have a 10-second teaser, and our first look at ‘Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Sony has announced that the film will reveal its first trailer on Tuesday. At the very least, this looks like a visually accomplished film — Benjamin Loeb (“Mandy”) is the DP.

The Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell-led project has raised eyebrows due to its radio silence. Since wrapping production last June, the film test-screened at least four times, with early word-of-mouth suggesting mixed results.

Details about the plot have been tightly guarded, though it’s believed to follow two strangers who meet at a wedding and embark on a GPS-guided adventure that involves time travel and romance.

The film is being described as “an imaginative tale of two strangers and the unbelievable journey that connects them.” It’s produced by Imperative Entertainment and penned by “The Menu” writer Seth Reiss.

Director Kogonada, an elusive video essayist turned auteur, made a stunning debut with 2017’s “Columbus,” and followed it with the contemplative sci-fi “After Yang” in 2021, which also starred Farrell. While After Yang didn’t quite land for me—overloaded with ideas and lacking in execution—it was critically well received.
