Five-movie day, and I’m about to call it a night—but I just left a screening of Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” which earned a ridiculous 19-minute standing ovation, and major raves from critics, including IndieWire, Vanity Fair, Variety, THR, and The Wrap.
In “Sentimental Value,” Trier reunites with ‘Worst Person’ star Renate Reinsve and, for the first time, works with Stellan Skarsgård, Elle Fanning, and Cory Michael Smith. The story follows sisters Nora and Agnes as they reunite with their estranged father, Gustav, a once-famous director who offers Nora a role in his comeback film. When she declines, he casts a young Hollywood star instead, forcing the sisters to confront their fractured bond.
This is Norwegian filmmaker Trier’s return to Cannes following his acclaimed 2021 “The Worst Person in the World,” which earned Reinsve the Best Actress award. That NEON-acquired film went on to receive two Oscar nominations, including Best Original Screenplay.
