Denzel Washington & Robert Pattinson to Star in Fernando Meirelles’ ‘Here Comes the Flood’ for Netflix

May 14, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: I almost got all the details right in my scoop. The trades are now reporting that Robert Pattinson is also part of the cast — that’s a major addition.

EARLIER: Here’s an interesting greenlight, although it’ll probably result in film that goes straight to streaming.

Netflix has greenlit “Here Comes the Flood,” an ambitious heist film set to star Denzel Washington and Daisy Edgar-Jones with Fernando Meirelles at the helm.

The Brazilian auteur, best known for “City of God” “The Constant Gardener,” and “The Two Popes,” is returning to genre filmmaking with a twist-filled script penned by Simon Kinberg (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past”).

Described as an “unconventional heist movie,” “Here Comes the Flood” will reportedly center on a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief caught in a web of deception and shifting alliances. Expect cons within cons, layered betrayals, and a slow-burn intensity that matches Meirelles’ knack for textured storytelling.

While further production details are still under wraps, insiders hint that Washington’s role marks a darker, more cerebral turn for the two-time Oscar winner. Edgar-Jones, who broke out with “Normal People” and later starred in “Twisters,” continues her ascent into A-list territory.

This marks a return to genre territory for Meirelles, whose kinetic style and politically tinged narratives made him one of the more exciting filmmakers of the 2000s. Pairing him with Washington — who rarely misses — and Edgar-Jones could prove to be a savvy move.

While Washington recently confirmed that he’s working with various different directors on upcoming projects, including Ryan Coogler and Steve McQueen, this collaboration with Mereilles seems to be the next thing he’s going to shoot.

“Here Comes the Flood” is currently in pre-production, with a 2026 release eyed.
