Terrence Malick Has Asked Actors to Help Him Edit ‘The Way of the Wind’

April 3, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Another strange update regarding Terrence Malick’s “The Way of the Wind,” which might (or might not) show up at Cannes in May.

A report from The Film Stage has Malick asking numerous actors from previous films to try their hand at editing 'The Way of the Wind,' per a source close to the film.

This is technically not out of the ordinary for Malick; he's been working with as many as seven editors on every film he’s made this century, and that’s not including the visual artists that he installs in another separate room for input on the post-production process.

According to ‘Way of the Wind’ actor Mathieu Kassovitz, Malick shot close to 3000 hours of footage for the film. Maybe Jesus himself will arrive before this film gets finally released. No word yet on which actors he’s asked to shape his film, but it certainly won’t be Adrien Brody, who is still haunted by Malick cutting his scenes out in “The Thin Red Line.”

Purely speculating, but I gather, much like every film he’s made in the modern era, extensive subplots and narratives will get axed in the editing room on this one. Ten years from now, we’ll get an extended cut of the film that rearranges the structure. I’m willing to bet money on this.

Malick has been editing ‘Way of the Wind’ since 2019. The film is supposed to convey passages “in the life of Christ” through the representation of evangelical parables. Jesus Christ's descent into the world of the dead, also known as his “Descent into Hades,” is rumored to be one of the parables included in the film.

The cast includes the likes of Schoenaerts (as Saint Peter), Röhrig (as Jesus), Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes, and Mark Rylance (as Satan). Who gets axed? Certainly not Jesus, then again, I wouldn’t put it past Malick to do that.
