The last weekend of April is usually pretty slow at the box office—but not this time. Three big movies took over and shook up the charts.
Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” held strong in its second weekend, bringing in around $45M from Friday through Sunday. That’s a staggeringly low -6% drop from its $48M opening—a record for a major wide release, even outperforming “Get Out,” which dipped only 15% in the spring of 2017.
“Sinners” has now racked up $122M in domestic receipts. Internationally, it’s done slightly better, with the film earning roughly the same amount as last week’s $15M, barely showing any decline. Its cumulative worldwide total is set to hit $160M by Sunday evening.
The next few spots at the box office are shaping up to be a tight race. The 20th anniversary re-release of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” drew solid numbers—enough for second place—and is expected to land $25M. That puts it ahead of the 1997 re-release “The Empire Strikes Back: Special Edition,” which launched with $21.9M.
Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2”is aiming for a third-place finish with a $24.5M debut, slightly edging out the original film’s opening. Audiences seem to be on board, giving the sequel a respectable A– CinemaScore (the first earned an A).
Meanwhile, “A Minecraft Movie” is still holding on, heading into its fourth weekend with an estimated $22.7M. Rounding out the top five is Screen Gems’ “Until Dawn,” an R-rated horror flick based on the video game. Despite a lukewarm C+ CinemaScore, it’s projected to bring in $7–8M for its debut.

Paul Greengrass’ "The Uprising," starring Andrew Garfield, opened to $3.2M from 2,068 theaters this weekend. Yikes. The budget hasn’t been disclosed, but is said to be in the $20-$30M range.
