‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' Trailer Drops Like It’s 1997 Again

April 22, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s the trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Remember Jennifer Love Hewitt? She was a major pop culture fixture for a brief but memorable stretch in the late '90s and early 2000s, starring in teen favorites like “Can’t Hardly Wait” and the hit drama series “Party of Five.”

One of her most iconic roles came in the cult horror hit “I Know What You Did Last Summer”—and its sequel—which helped cement her scream queen status. Now, Sony is reviving the franchise, bringing Hewitt back alongside original co-star Freddie Prinze Jr. for a new chapter in the series. The upcoming film is being penned by Sam Lansky and Kaytin Robinson.

Freddie Prinze Jr. and Gellar are joined by a cast that includes Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King. While plot details remain under wraps, the title for the sequel remains “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Call it a soft reboot.

The original film centered around four young friends—played by Hewitt, Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe—whose lives take a dark turn after a tragic accident. A year later, they find themselves hunted by a mysterious figure wielding a hook, bringing their deadly secret back to life.

Why revisit a franchise known more for its camp than its quality? Simple—nostalgia is big business. There’s really no deeper reason. Millennials came of age with the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” films, and studios know how to tap into that sentimental pull. Still, it’s worth noting the franchise never exactly basked in critical glory. By the time the third installment limped onto the scene in 2006, it bypassed theaters entirely and went straight to DVD, barely making a blip.

Now, Sony Pictures is betting there’s still gas in the tank, with the soft reboot set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
