More than three years after it wrapped production, we finally now have our first look at Peter Dinklage as The Toxic Avenger (via EW). It took ‘em long enough. This film has had a tumultuous journey to the big screen.
Last year, I reported on Macon Blair’s remake of “The Toxic Avenger,” and how distributors deemed it “too out there” and “unreleasable.” Sources said that despite its known cast, and good reviews, struggled to secure distribution due to how violent it was.
A few monags ago, Cineverse, the company behind the ‘Terrifer’ movies, finally picked up ‘Toxic Avenger’ with plans to release it in theaters this year. The film, which ran the risk of being stamped with an NC-17 rating, has decided to go “unrated” — bypassing the MPA.
‘Toxic Avenger’ actually had its first public screening in September 2023 at Fantastic Fest, it went on to also screen at Beyond Fest and the Sitges Film Festival. The reviews currently have it at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
For those who aren’t familiar with the original 1984 film, which has a cult following, it tells the story of a janitor who gets exposed to toxic waste, turning him into a deformed superhero. He then goes on a mission of revenge.
Blair directed the 2017 Sundance winner “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” and “Toxic Avenger” is his sophomore follow-up. He’s a twisted mind, and I look forward to seeing what he’s concocted in ‘Toxic Avenger.’
