Sean Durkin to Direct ‘Deep Cuts' for A24 — Austin Butler & Saoirse Ronan to Star

February 27, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Sources tell Deadline Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler are set to star in Sean Durkin’s “Deep Cuts,” A24 will produce. The project is an adaptation of Holly Brickley’s debut novel which was released in bookstores this month. Durkin is writing the screenplay.

Set in the 2000s, Deep Cuts is a love story about two music-obsessed twenty-somethings navigating the messy realities of ambition, belonging and adulthood over the course of an era-defining decade.

This could be the reason why Durkin, who was offered to direct HBO’s “Lanterns,” opted out of that DCU Series. A deal was close to being finalized last year, but maybe it was best for him to stick to cinema. Wise decision as Durkin is too talented to waste his time on TV.

Durkin has so far directed three strong films, “Martha Marcy May Marlene” “The Nest,” and “The Iron Claw” — the latter was produced by A24 and, backed by strong reviews, became a sleeper hit in late 2023. Here’s hoping Durkin continues that streak with this next one.

No production date has yet to be set up for “Deep Cuts.” Butler has two films releasing in 2025 (“Eddington” and “Caught Stealing”) and also a few projects in development, including “The Barrier,” “American Speed,” “City on Fire,” and, maybe, Michael Mann’s “Heat 2.”

Meanwhile, the Oscar-nominated Ronan might be starring in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia,’ which is supposed to shoot this fall. She starred in two films last year, Sundance hit “The Outrun” and the Steve McQueen directed “Blitz.”
