Report: Stephen Graham Joins Michael Mann’s ‘Heat 2’

December 26, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

As Michael Mann continues to prep for "Heat 2", set to shoot in August, he’s just added another actor to his ensemble—and this one’s a key role.

Sources tell Nexus Point News that Stephen Graham has reportedly been offered the role of the younger Neil McCauley, famously played by Robert De Niro in the first film, released in 1995. Graham would join a cast that already includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale. Speculation has also emerged that Adam Driver is up for a role in the movie.

Now, I do think Graham is in the movie, and Nexus does have a fairly solid track record when it comes to casting scoops. But casting him as a younger McCauley? That feels like a reach. Graham is the same age De Niro was when “Heat” came out in 1995—so how exactly is he supposed to play a younger version?

Michael Mann penned the script for "Heat 2" based on his 2022 novel of the same name, which he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. The novel serves as both a prequel and sequel to Mann’s "Heat". Mann will return to direct and produce "Heat 2", with Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt producing alongside him.

Graham recently starred in Netflix’s "Adolescence", which earned him the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The British-born actor is best known for his roles in "Venom", the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, "Peaky Blinders", and was most recently seen in "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere". Graham is currently in production on Florian Zeller’s "Bunker", starring Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Paul Dano, and Patrick Schwarzenegger.

As for "Heat 2", there’s been endless speculation about whether DiCaprio would play the Vincent Hanna or Chris Shiherlis role. In a recent interview, DiCaprio admitted, “We’re working on it… It’s certainly exciting.” The same goes for who Christian Bale will be playing, although it’s been speculated he might be a villain.

There are still several key roles left to be cast. Other rumored names that have circulated include Austin Butler, Adam Driver, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Allen White, and Channing Tatum. More official casting is expected very soon.

Mann’s 2022 novel tackles dual timelines—the aftermath of the original’s botched robbery and a new wave of global heists years later—and DiCaprio stressed that the film will stand on its own: “We can’t duplicate what ‘Heat’ was… It’s paying homage, but giving it its own unique entity.”
