Kristen Stewart Setting Up Her Next Directorial Effort: Plans Shoot in “Next Couple of Months"

December 1, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

This year’s Cannes Film Festival had Kristen Stewart making the pivot behind the camera with “The Chronology of Water,” which has earned good reviews but was recently acquired by little-known indie outlet The Forge.

Stewart is now telling IndieWire that she’s already planning to shoot her sophomore effort in the “next couple of months.” No title or plot details were revealed, but an L.A. shoot is being planned.

I want this thing to feel light as air. I don’t want the heavy burden like ‘Chronology,’ which looks like a body that’s been through a lot. The process needs to be one that feels ephemeral, and I’m setting it up now

Stewart has strongly hinted that directing will now be a central focus for her, admitting there are “10 more movies I want to make f*cking yesterday.” We’ll likely be seeing less of her onscreen in the coming years and more of her behind the camera, where she seems increasingly determined to carve out a long-term creative home.

“The Chronology of Water,” starring Imogen Poots and coming out in December, is based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s cult-favorite memoir, which has been simmering in the Hollywood underground for nearly a decade. With auteurist ambitions in tow, Stewart co-wrote the screenplay herself — “with Yuknavitch’s blessing” — and eventually secured a home for the film under Ridley Scott’s indie-focused Scott Free banner.
