Uh, what? Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone may be teaming up for their first movie together—and it’s… unusual.
This morning, Lawrence appeared on the Las Culturistas podcast with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. During the wide-ranging conversation, the discussion turned to the Broadway hit Oh, Mary!, and Lawrence dropped the surprising news:
I don't know if I can announce this, but I'm just going to. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie.
“Oh, Mary” writer and star, Cole Escola is writing the screenplay for Stone and Lawrence’s Muppets movie.
When asked if she and Stone would star in the film, Lawrence laughed: “I think so… We have to.” Beyond that, no further details were mentioned.
Cole Escola, though a Tony Award winner, hasn’t yet penned any theatrically released screenplays, but has built a resume in television, contributing episodes to “The Other Two,” “At Home with Amy Sedaris,” and “Ziwe.”
Miss Piggy is a central character in the Muppets franchise, created by puppeteer Jim Henson and originally performed by Frank Oz. She is a female pig known for her glamorous style, diva personality, karate chops, and romantic obsession with Kermit the Frog.
As for me? I’m all for a new Muppets adventure. I’ve long campaigned for them to host the Oscars, and honestly, they deserve it. The last Muppet film, “Muppets Most Wanted,” hit theaters in 2014, but it’s 2011’s The Muppets that remains dearest to my heart —a glittery, chaos-fueled love letter to puppetry, nostalgia, and pure, unadulterated joy.
Stone recently alluded to having two mysterious projects ready to shoot next year. Lawrence is in Martin Scorsese’s next film (“What Happens at Night”) which is eyeing a January/February production start.
