As production continues on Robert Eggers’ “Werwulf,” we’ve already gotten some first-look images from the U.K. of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who clearly plays the werewolf. He can be seen covered in blood and howling his lungs off.
We now have additional stills — this time of Lily-Rose Depp, completely deglammed from her usual, and Willem Dafoe, as always, fully in character. This will be the feel-good movie of 2026. Most recently, a member of Eggers’ sound team went on Instagram saying that after he read the script for “Werwulf,” he “needed a hug.”
Eggers recently conducted a post-screening Q&A at the Lincoln Center, and described “Werewulf” as “the darkest thing I’ve ever written.”
In “The Witch,” three children—including an infant—are killed. In “The Lighthouse,” madness descends through visions of mermaids, corpse-pecking gulls, and a lonely sailor pleasuring himself. “Nosferatu” centers on a demonic predator obsessed with an innocent woman. And yet, we’re being told “Werewulf” will go even darker?
“Werwulf,” described as a gothic horror epic, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson. The film is said to take place in 13th-century England and, although no plot details have emerged, the title suggests it will most likely involve a werewolf.
“Werwulf,” which is being shot on 35mm film in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio, is slated for a Christmas 2026 release via Focus Features. Eggers is coming off the immense success of “Nosferatu,” which was also unveiled during that time frame last year.
