In case you didn’t hear, a “Jennifer’s Body” sequel is definitely in the works now. Amanda Seyfried had previously hinted as much, and now we have confirmation that the script is being written.
While speaking with Deadline, director Karyn Kusama says that Diablo Cody (“Juno”) is currently working on the script.
“I know she’s working on it right now, and I’m very excited to hear what comes of it,” Kusama said. “I know some of the bones of it, so I’m not going to give anything away, but it sounds fun and crazy like the first film. And I have no doubt that Diablo will do something absolutely incredible with it.”
Although it had been hinted at for over five years now, the sequel was never actually confirmed to be in development, let alone greenlit by 20th Century. Additionally, director Karyn Kusama has shown enthusiasm for the project, saying, “I would love to revisit that world.”
Released in 2009, “Jennifer’s Body,” which starred Megan Fox, barely made a dent at the box office, but 15 years later—and thanks to home video—the film is considered, in some circles, a horror classic.
Seyfried starred as Needy, whose best friend Jennifer (Fox) is sacrificed by the lead singer (Adam Brody) of a band touring through town—she ends up turning into a flesh-eating predator who preys on unsuspecting boys to survive.
The film blended sharp wit and horror, creating a dark commentary on the dangers of unchecked desire and the complexities of 21st-century feminism. I liked it in 2009, and I still like it today—it was ahead of its time; a wickedly entertaining post-modern satire.
Kusama hasn’t directed a film in over seven years. She’s been keeping busy with television projects, serving as an executive producer on “Yellowjackets,” but it looks like “Jennifer’s Body 2” might break that spell. Her other notable directing credits include “The Invitation,” “Girlfight,” and “Destroyer.”
