Scott Cooper’s “Deliver Me From Nowhere” is being released tomorrow, but the filmmaker admits there have already been talks with the film’s subject — Bruce Springsteen — about making a sequel (via Variety)
I suppose if you can make four Beatles movies, you can make a couple of Bruce Springsteen movies
“Deliver Me From Nowhere” dramatizes the recording of Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska, as he battled depression and the memories of his traumatic childhood. Jeremy Allen White plays the musician, Jeremy Strong portrays his manager, Jon Landau.
In a way, it would make sense to continue the story. The film covers only one—albeit crucial—year in Springsteen’s life and ends just as Born in the U.S.A. is about to be released, propelling his career into total superstardom.
There are so many chapters in Bruce’s life, in all seriousness, that are quite right for cinematic treatment. That’s something, quite honestly, that Bruce and I have discussed. I think he really loves this film. He’s loved the experience […] I think he’s ready for more.
If the film is a success, then sure — why not? “Deliver Me From Nowhere” has a $55M budget, with early projections putting its opening weekend at around $8–10M. Not exactly numbers that scream “sequel.” It doesn’t help that critics have been mixed on the film (61 Metascore) and the Oscar buzz from its Telluride premiere has dwindled since then.
