Daniel Day-Lewis stepped out of retirement just to act in his son Ronan’s directorial debut, “Anemome.” This wasn’t about ego or legacy—it feels more like a dad doing something purely out of family love.
Unfortunately, audiences didn’t care. Focus Features gave “Anemone” a solid release (1000+ theaters), but the film cratered, barely scraping a million domestically after two weeks. Not even Day-Lewis’s return could save it.
Turns out, “Anemone” quietly hit VOD today — a mere 18 days after being theatrically released. For curiosity seekers, hardcore cinephiles, this will probably be the best way to watch Day-Lewis’ acting comeback. C’mon, I know you have slight interest in this film, even if it at times it feels like watching paint dry.
“Anemone” was always going to be a tough sell without critics championing it, and those raves never came. Still, there’s a tiny hope tucked inside this misfire. If “Anemone” ends up being the spark for more great performance, then the flop might have been worth it.
