Following her Palme d’Or win and Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Justine Triet—the French filmmaker behind “Anatomy of a Fall” —has been attracting serious attention from Hollywood.
The latest update has ‘Anatomy’ producer, Marie Ange Luciani, posting an image on Instagram of Triet on a set alongside collaborators, which include DP Tom Harari — who happens to be a Daniel Clowes superfan (more on that below).
Luciani simply captioned the image (translated from French), “Justine and her gang,” adding a few eyeball emojis to suggest that something’s going on. What exactly? We’re not entirely sure.
Could the film being prepped be an adaptation of Clowes’ “Monica”? Last year, Triet confirmed having been approached to direct a film adaptation of “Monica,” the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, with Cate Blanchett attached to star. Still, Triet noted that she hadn’t yet decided whether she would take on the project.
Another update came, this past May, when Variety reported that Triet was soon going to shoot something “in English with some major stars attached.”
In Clowes’ acclaimed 2023 novel, the author blends several different genres into one story, separating them by chapter, chronicling the journey of a girl who is in search of her mother and trying to uncover her mysterious past.
Last year, Luciani told RTL that Triet was currently being pursued by top figures across the industry, and that even Steven Spielberg personally met with Triet and her writing partner Arthur Harari, expressing his admiration for their work and offering them a chance to write a screenplay for him.
Triet isn’t a one-trick pony either. Her previous films, before ‘Anatomy,’ included two works well worth seeking out: “Victoria” (2016) and her underseen gem “Sibyl” (2019).
