Marvel boss Kevin Feige has finally found his director.
Daniel Destin Cretton has signed up to direct “Spider-Man 4.” This ends much speculation about who was going to replace Jon Watts as filmmaker of the franchise. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are back as screenwriters.
Cretton (“Short Term 12”) is one of many Sundance alums that Marvel/Disney have snatched up in recent years to helm their multiverse films (Watts was another one). Cretton directed ‘Shang-Chi,’ and is working on the sequel — he’s also heading the Disney+ series “Wonder Man.” Earlier in the year, he had dropped out of “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” because of a scheduling conflict.
It is unclear what the story will be this time around for ‘Spider-Man 4.’ The last instalment ended with the world forgetting that teenager Peter Parker was Spidey. That memory wipe included MJ (Zendaya), who no longer knows who Peter is.
‘Spider-Man 4’ is set to shoot early next year which means Zendaya might not be back for this sequel, unless “Euphoria” season 3 has been delayed, yet again. The HBO series was supposed to shoot from January to May 2025.
Tom Holland is set to return in his role as Peter Parker. There’s still no release date set up for “Spider-Man 4,” but it now looks like a 2026 release is being eyed for the film. The last instalment (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) grossed a whopping $1.9B worldwide despite being released in 2021 during the pandemic.
