Zach Cregger Set to Direct ‘Clue’ Movie

September 18, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Zach Cregger turned a lot of heads in late 2022 when “Barbarian” became a critical and commercial success, grossing $45M against a skimp $4.5M budget.

Cregger has shot his next film, “Weapons,” recently dated for January 16, 2026, release, and coming to us with very high expectations. Cregger’s spec script was so hot that it spawned a bidding war, between multiple studios. Warner Bros/New Line won the rights, buying it for a whopping $38M

A stacked cast soon followed for “Weapons”: Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Brian Tyree Henry, Tom Burke, Austin Abrams, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong and June Diane Raphael. I’m just wondering why Warner/New Line would want to schedule this film during the dog days of January. If they have a strong film in their hands, don’t be surprised if that date moves.

In any case, Cregger seems to have set up his next film after “Barbarian” as he is in talks to direct the “Clue” movie, based on the famous boardgame, for Sony’s TriStar Pictures label. Shay Hatten (“Rebel Moon”, John Wick 3 & 4) will write the script (via TheInSneider).

Clue already had a big screen adaptation in 1985, with Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, and Michael McKean among the cast. Directed by Jonathan Lynn, the film has its loyal following, and it was inevitably going to get a remake 40 years later.

The synopsis reads: “Six guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up”.

Many years ago, Gore Verbinski was once attached to direct “Clue”. Jason Bateman also had his own version in development, starring Ryan Reynolds. There was even the possibility of an animated version, from Dewayne Perkins, but it never got greenlit.

In the meantime, Cregger has “Weapons” coming up, and although plot details are being kept in the dark, I’ve read the script, which is as ambitious a story as buzzed about. It’ll be interesting to see how Cregger juggles the intricate and multi-layered storylines on the screen.
