RUMOR: Paramount Destroyed 70mm IMAX Prints of Christopher Nolan's ‘Interstellar,' September Re-Release Now in Question [Updated]

August 7, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: On the same day it was rumored that Paramount had destroyed the 70mm prints, we get an announcement, just a few hours later, that the “Interstellar” re-release has been pushed back to December. However, don’t worry, nothing to see here, Variety’s sources claim it has nothing to do with any prints having been destroyed. Do you believe them?

EARLIER: According to rumors that have been picking up steam, Paramount actually destroyed its 70mm IMAX prints of Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar.” The September re-release is now in question and might be scrapped, or limited to theaters who still have a print to show.

Suffice to say, Nolan is not to happy about this and is said to be “furious.” If this ends up being true then this is a colossal f*ck up on the part of Paramount. Why would they announce a 70mm IMAX re-release without realizing what they’ve done to the prints?

Paramount is the same studio that in 1991 destroyed every 70mm print of Terrence Malick’s "Days of Heaven”. The story goes that it was a glaring mistake, Paramount employees misread the memo calling for excess 70mm "Days of Thunder" prints to be liquidated.

Nolan, a 70mm and IMAX fanatic, is/was supposed to host a few Q&As of the film’s 70mm re-release in September. I’ve contacted Paramount reps for comment, but they have so far not replied to my emails. Stay tuned.
