Joshua Oppenheimer's ‘The End' Not Going to Venice?

June 8, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Hearing shaky things about this one. It might have the same fate as Audrey Diwan’s “Emmanuelle” and not show up at either Cannes or Venice … However, Telluride is a real possibility for a world premiere. Just what I’m hearing.

“The End” is a post-apocalyptic “Golden Age” musical. It started production in February 2023. The film stars George MacKay, Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, Moses Ingram, Bronagh Gallagher, Tim McInnerny and Lennie James. Neon is producing. The plot centers on the last human family alive. Here’s the synopsis:

A post-apocalyptic story about a rich family, surviving two decades after the world ended, living in a salt mine converted into a luxurious home. The earth around them has apparently been destroyed, but their 13-year-old son, born in the bunker, has never seen the outside world. There is a maid, with whom the son has his only honest relationship. There is also a doctor, and a butler. Unspoken blame over leaving loved ones behind looms over this family, hollowing out whatever intimacy they once shared. Suddenly, a young girl appears at the entrance of the bunker, the balance of the family is threatened.

Oppenheimer is known for his two highly acclaimed docs, “The Act of Killing” and “The Look of Silence,” which tackled the Indonesian mass killings of 1965-66. “The End” is his first foray in fiction filmmaking.
