Readers' Thoughts on Richard Linklater's ‘Hit Man'?

June 8, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is now available to stream on Netflix, in the U.S. It’s also playing theatrically in Canada, and a host of other countries.

So, what did our readers think of the film? “Hit Man” stars Glenn Powell (“Top Gun: Maverick”) as Gary Johnson, a police staff investigator who plays the role of a hit man to catch individuals ordering a hit. He ends up falling hard for Madison (Adria Arjona) whom he talks out of a hit on her abusive husband.

I watched it again last night. It’s a sexy and darkly funny noir from Linklater. “Hit Man” keeps messing with your head as characters switch identities, and the lies continue to pile up. It was a tad less effective watching it at home, instead of in theaters where the packed audience around me absolutely ate it all up and burst into applause during certain scenes.

Don’t expect high art with this one. It just wants to entertain you with its screwball noir theatrics. I gave the film a “B+” and I’ll stick with that grade. Also, Powell’s shape-shifting performance is definitely what you’d call a career booster, but I must also mention Adria Arjona as the femme fatale — she’s stunningly sexy. Her chemistry with Powell in this film is electric.
