Richard Linklater to Direct ‘Blue Moon' — Ethan Hawke in Talks to Star

June 3, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s a report, via Deadline, about a project I’ve known about for a few weeks now. I was told not write anything about it until it got announced. However, I do have an interesting casting detail to add in here.

Richard Linklater is developing a new film titled “Blue Moon”, about the sometimes-rocky relationship between songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz Hart. What Deadline doesn’t mention is that Ethan Hawke has been attached to this project since last year— he’s playing one of the two leads.

Robert Kaplow, who co-wrote Linklater’s underrated “Me and Orson Welles,” has penned the screenplay, which is said to tackle the behind-the-scenes chaos that occurred during opening night of the Broadway musical “Oklahoma!” which saw Rodgers working with a new partner, Oscar Hammerstein II.

It hasn’t been confirmed whether “Blue Moon” will be Linklater’s next film, but Deadline’s hinting at it, and I had been told that it most likely is. Linklater’s “Hit Man” is hitting Netflix on Friday, and he also recently shot “Nouvelle Vague” in Paris, set to be his first film entirely in French. He also has his highly ambitious “Merrily We Roll Along,” which won’t be ready for release until 2041.
