Trailer + Test Reaction for A24's ‘Heretic'

June 24, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Here’s the trailer.

EARLIER: A trailer will be released on Tuesday for Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ “Heretic.” This is an upcoming horror thriller produced by A24. It’s set for release on November 15, 2024.

“Heretic”, which stars Hugh Grant and Chloe East, tackles two Mormon missionaries whose attempts to convert a man turn haywire and very dangerous.

A test screening for the film occurred last week at The Grove in Los Angeles. I can definitely see this one showing up as a midnight screening at TIFF and/or at Fantastic Fest. Here’s a test reaction:

This was a cleverly written and tightly wounded cat and mouse game filled with suspense. Hugh Grant gives such a creepy and evil performance; it reminded me of Kathy Bates’ Annie Wilkes in “Misery”. The cinematography is also really impressive, very sleek, and gives the movie an impressively big scope, despite the contained singular set piece.

So, who are Beck and Woods? They are probably best known as the writing duo behind 2018’s “A Quiet Place.” As directors, it’s a little wobblier as they are responsible for a couple of duds, including the infamous Adam Driver vs. Dinosaurs film “65” and 2015’s little seen, and badly reviewed, “Nightlight.”

More to come …
