George Miller is Writing Another ‘Mad Max' Prequel

May 1, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

I can sense some excitement for George Miller’s ‘Furiosa,” which has a story that unfolds over 20 years. Miller is now teasing of another potential ‘Mad Max’ story taking place right after the concluding events of ‘Furiosa’ and a year before ‘Fury Road.’

Miller had already mentioned having written a novella during the extended production delays on ‘Fury Road,’ alongside the '“Furiosa” script. However, he’s now saying that he’s currently in the process of turning that novella into a screenplay (via EW).

"In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film],” Miller explains. “And as we get towards the end of [Furiosa], the chronology, basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened. The writers know what happened to Mad Max in that year before, and we have a whole story of that, which I would like to do sometime if I get the chance.”

When pressed for an update on that project, Miller says, "Well, we are certainly working on it. And as I say, we wrote that basically as a novella, and now we've got a chance, we will get that into a screenplay form, and then we'll take it from there."

In “Fury Road,” we see Max haunted by various ghosts from his past, including a young girl named Glory the Child. This young girl was explored in both a spinoff comic book and video game. She’d very likely be a part of this next prequel.

News of this screenplay only enhances our doubts about the ‘Fury Road’ seque,l “Mad Max: Wasteland,” ever happening. It’s already going to be a real chore getting Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron back for the second one, as both famously disliked each other during production of ‘Fury Road.’

In the meantime, we have “Furiosa,” set to debut at Cannes this month, and it’s rumored to have a very brief Max cameo, which may very well lead to the next film being the one described by Miller.
