There’s only a handful of 2024 films with a fighting chance to cross the billion dollar mark at the worldwide box-office — maybe, “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Despicable Me 4,” “Deadpool 3” and “Dune: Part Two.”
Speaking of the latter, just a few weeks ago some very early, and overzealous, projections had ‘Dune 2’ opening at around $100 million. In 2021, “Dune” earned $41 million in its opening weekend, and that was despite a hybrid theatrical/HBO Max release.
Deadline has put those $100 million hopes back down to earth. Their inside tracking is currently for ‘Dune 2’ to open at around $65M+ domestically. They might be low-balling it a tad, I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes as high as $75-80M. However, presales are currently pacing ahead of the advance ticket sales for ”Oppenheimer,” and we all know how that one turned out.
