“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is coming out on Friday. I had zero interest in seeing the movie, but that 87% on RT is certainly surprising. Then again, RT is now filled with “critics” from YouTube and fanboy blogs.
With that said, audiences keep eating this stuff, and ‘Sonic 3’ will probably top the box-office this weekend with a $60M opening. Variety’s now saying that “Sonic 4” is already in the works and has set up a spring 2027 release. What’s the end game here? Keep delivering these movies until the money dries up?
The ‘Sonic’ movies just don’t click for me, but much like the ‘Venom’ franchise, there’s a very large audience for them, so much so that both have had their third instalments released this year. The first two ‘Sonic’ movies made over $800M at the worldwide box office for Paramount.
‘Sonic’ kickstarted the latest Hollywood trend of video game adaptations, which peaked in popularity with last year’s “Super Mario Bros Movie.” This third movie has a cast that includes Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Krysten Ritter, and others. Jeff Fowler returns for the third time as filmmaker.
