It’s called “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” Yes, ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ has been given a title, and a first trailer. The film will be released in theaters on May 23, 2025.
There have been reports that ‘The Final Reckoning,’ which has been plagued by delays and had an 18 month production, cost close to $400M. No matter, bring it on. ‘Mission: Impossible’ has been one of the most consistent franchises in Hollywood, upping the stakes with every movie.
The synopsis for ‘Final Reckoning’ is about as cryptic as it gets: “Our lives are the sum of our choices.” With that said, it’s an obvious follow-up to 2023’s ‘Dead Reckoning’ which underperformed at the box-office, but was filled with strong action, including that bonkers finale on a hanging train.
‘Mission: Impossible 8’ had restarted shooting in March 2024, after last year’s strikes halted production on the movie in mid-July 2023. There’s been a lot of delays with this one, and more bad luck recently occurred on the film when it had been reportedly delayed, yet again, due to a malfunction while filming with a $25M submarine. The film finally completed production last month.
It’s not like ‘Part One’ was a bad movie, it wasn’t, and it definitely delivered the thrills we’ve come to expect from the franchise, but audiences just didn’t show up in masses. This has led to Paramount’s interest in promoting the next instalment as the “final” entry in the action franchise as a way of boosting audience interest — Cruise has pushed back on this plan and warned the studio not to promote it as such.
In addition to Cruise, ‘Final Reckoning’ stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt.
