It sure looks like DC Studios is developing a brand-new John Constantine movie, with Francis Galluppi writing the script. Galluppi made the low-budget indie "The Last Stop in Yuma County" and is now in post-production on "Evil Dead Wrath." On paper, it's a promising hire.
With all that in mind, the obvious question many have tonight is: what happens to "Constantine 2"?
Many have been tracking the Keanu Reeves-starring sequel for years. Back in May 2025, Peter Stormare said Keanu was "not so happy" with the scripts. By October, after rewrites, Keanu was finally on board. Reeves even said his pitch had been presented to DC Studios and approved. James Gunn has also said he's spoken to Reeves about it.
Now the Galluppi news has dropped, and none of the trades mention the potential Keanu-starring, Francis Lawrence-directed sequel. That's obviously not an oversight, and there are murmurs that James Gunn and Peter Safran, who control what gets greenlit at DC Studios, have put the kibosh on that project.
"I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing," Lawrence told Collider. "We have something really cool in the works," he said, before adding that he and star Keanu Reeves are "super, super excited about it."
The "Constantine" source material was popularized by DC's "Hellblazer" comics, based on the character created by Alan Moore and Stephen R. Bissette. In the film, Reeves starred as John Constantine, a supernatural exorcist and demonologist who, while dying, fights to save his soul.
The 2005 film wasn't a huge hit. It made $230M on a $100M budget and was met with mixed reviews, yet, against all odds, it became a cult classic, building a massive following on home video and streaming. Keanu has wanted to make a sequel for two decades, and the result has been continuous fan demand for a sequel that now might not be coming.
We have more on-set images of Austin Butler as Crockett and Michael B. Jordan as Tubbs in Joseph Kosinski's "Miami Vice '85," which is currently filming in — where else — Miami.
