So, this is absolutely a rumor, especially given the source, but I thought it would be well worth tackling, especially given the slow news day we’ve just had.
Yesterday, Christopher Nolan announced his next film, which will be backed by Universal. It’s set to star Matt Damon, and has set up a July 17, 2026 release date. That’s all we know so far. Given the mystery that surrounds this new Nolan project, speculation was inevitably going to occur.
Here’s a rumor. Beyond the Trailer’s Grace Randolph says she’s hearing that Nolan’s new film is more “genre-y” than his previous ones, and then seemingly mentions that it might actually be a horror movie. If that’s the case, then I’m certainly intrigued.
This past February, Nolan spoke about horror films at BFI. He called the genre “visceral,” with “a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction,” and that it allowed filmmakers to do things onscreen that Hollywood was typically “resistant to.” He additionally mentioned that, if “an exceptional idea” came to him, he would definitely make a horror film.
Oppenheimer has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter. I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film […] I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where the studios make a lot of these films, and they are films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting in films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.
In his career, Nolan has dabbled in sci-fi, noir, biopic, comic book, and war films. Horror would be a fresh new direction. We’ve been seeing more and more A-list filmmakers delving into the genre of late, including most recently, an upcoming Coen brothers film. Alfonso Cuaron had also mentioned that he was developing a horror film.
Since an early 2025 shoot is being prepped on Nolan’s film, I would expect more details to start leaking about the project in the coming weeks. It should also be mentioned that one thing this next Nolan isn’t is a remake of “The Prisoner,” that persistent rumor was just debunked by THR.
